Around Dutchland, July 1998

by Penny Pyrbred

Well, folks, not much has happened since our last issue. Penny understands that the Spring Walk-in-the-Woods conducted by Jeff and Patti Bechtel was a huge success, with some 25 people and their Pyrs participating. While Penny prefers more urban entertainment, it is nice that we have activities for the rugged, outdoorsPyrs.

Please note the change in date for the Pyrenean Fun Day to Sunday, July 26th. Penny hopes to see lots of old friends and meet some new ones. This is always THE highlight of the summer social season.

Clondike has been invited to accompany a mystery Pyr named Glacier at Fun Day. This girl just keeps gaining admirers. Our cover photo for this issue is of another one of her beaux, Kazak Stroh Miller from Taos, NM (click here for photos). He's really the "Marshall McCloud" of Pyrs and quite a hunk!!!

Speaking of Clondike, some members have already heard that she has been diagnosed with canine lymphoma, a form of lymph cancer similar to Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in humans. She has no symptoms, has begun chemotherapy, and according to her vets is doing very well (and, no, her coat isn't falling out). She IS sporting the "punk look," with various areas shaved to allow for biopsies and bone marrow tests, but Ms. PB Marple (who's had a bit of cosmetic surgery herself lately) has assured her it is all the rage this season. Penny wishes her well with her treatment.

While we are on the subject of things medical, please note that there is a GPCA Health Committee Survey Form enclosed with this issue (click here to complete an on-line version). Please take time to fill one out on each Pyr, past and present. The Committee has over 4,000 dogs in the database, but this just scratches the surface. To give an accurate picture of the health of our breed, the Committee needs information on the widest possible sample of Pyrs, both healthy and not-so-healthy.

Coming up next on the Penn-Dutch calendar (be sure to read the "Coming Events" section in every issue) is the fall GPCA Regional Spectialty marking the Penn-Dutch 10th anniversary. Show Chair Dianne Migas promises lots of fun activities, so come on out whether you show or not. The Tex/Mex Buffet sounds inviting!!

Keep cool and think rain for our members and friends down in Florida. Rumor has it that Barney Huggard is organizing all the dogs for a group piddle.

See you soon.
